Born on August 26, 1946, in Bloomfield, Iowa, to Rex Gordon and Mary Louise (Fisher) Short, David's early years were spent in Milton, where he formed the foundation of a life characterized by learning, teaching, and adventure.
A proud graduate of Fox Valley High School in 1964, David's thirst for knowledge led him to Northeast Missouri State University, where he earned a degree in English and Spanish. His love story with Ana Isabel Rigioni began in Kirksville, MO, and they were united in marriage on May 20, 1967. David furthered his education at the University of Missouri in Columbia, obtaining a master's degree in Spanish and nearing the completion of his doctorate.
The call of international experience took David and his family to Costa Rica, where he imparted his passion for language as an English teacher at the University of Costa Rica for two years. The family's return to Iowa saw David continue his vocation as an educator, teaching English and Spanish at Seymore, Fox Valley, and Davis County High Schools, as well as Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. His dedication to education was unwavering, and his influence on countless students is a testament to his commitment to their futures.
David's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He found joy in the company of horses, the precision of firearms, and the creativity of woodworking. His service to the community through the Milton Lions Club, a former Fox Valley 4-H Member turned 4-H Leader and the Van Buren County Historical Society reflected his deep roots and love for his hometown. He was a lifelong member of the Milton United Methodist Church. An adventurer at heart, David's spirit of exploration led him on a month-and-a-half hitchhiking odyssey across South and Central America in the 1980s. His involvement with the Iowa Foreign Exchange programs and the educational trips he led to Costa Rica enriched the lives of many.
David's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Ana, and their children: Allen Short (Christine) of Bermuda Dunes, CA; Andrew Short (Dawn) of Colo, Iowa; and Allison Tedrow (Brad) of Cantril, Iowa. His brother, Curtis Short (Kelly) of Milton, and sisters, Diane Peterson (Merle) of Oxford Junction, IA, and Anita Marlay (Greg) of Camdenton, MO, also survive him. David was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren; Morgan and Preston Short, Spencer, Mailey, Gannon, Landyn, Aidyn and Kinley Short and Gabe (Hanna), Erin and Brant Tedrow and eagerly anticipated the arrival of twin great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
David Anthony Short lived a life rich in experiences and relationships. His memory will be treasured by all who knew him, and his impact will continue to resonate through the generations he touched. As a teacher, mentor, and family man, David's story is one of love, dedication, and the enduring power of education. His presence will be sorely missed, but his legacy will forever remain a part of the community he so dearly loved.
