James Robert Bartlett Jr. was born December 27, 1948 in Ottumwa, IA to James and Nora "Baker" Bartlett. He grew up in the Ottumwa area and called his grandparents' house home while he attended Ottumwa High School. James left school and enlisted in the United States Navy on August 14, 1967. He proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in May of 1971. During his time in the service, he returned home where he met and married the love of his life Ellen "Sue" Roberts. The two were married in Agency, IA on February 17, 1970. James quickly returned to San Diego, CA where he was stationed, but did so with his loving wife by his side. They began their family with their first born, a son, James. After his discharge from the service, the family returned home to the Eldon area where they continued their family with the birth of a daughter, Dana. Upon returning from the service, James completed his schooling and began working at Chain and Cable in Fairfield IA. While working a full time job he continued his education and graduated from the Machinist Program at Indian Hills. James also spent time working at Everco, Excel, and Pro Tan in Ottumwa IA, where he worked alongside his daughter, Dana. When James had some time away from work, he enjoyed collecting coins, watching old TV shows, and traveling. He spent seventeen years as a member of the Wapello County Sheriff Reserves and was an extremely proud and active member of the Eldon Fire and Rescue for over thirty-eight years. James was a loving husband and father who will be deeply missed by his family, and those who called him their friend.

James was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nora.

Left to honor his memory is his loving wife, Sue Bartlett of Eldon, IA; two children, James (Brenda) Bartlett and Dana (Tom) Blunt of Eldon, IA; three grandchildren, Jacob Bedford, Taylor Blunt, and Kaylie Blunt; two great grandchildren; four siblings, Rose Ann Bartlett, Kevin Bartlett, Brenda Bartlett, and Mike Hobbs, as well as many extended family and friends.
