Van Ulrich Ritz Obituary (1955 - 2024)

Van Ulrich Ritz, 69, of Fairfield, IA and formerly of Douds, IA passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. As were Van's wishes, cremation has taken place with services to be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in Van's honor may be directed to animal shelter of the donor's choice. Friends may leave online condolences at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com. Van Ulrich Ritz was born on February 24, 1955, in Douds, IA to Henry and Marjorie Snelling Ritz. He began working at the age of 16 at Iowa Malleable Iron Company but also finished school, graduating from Cardinal High School in Eldon, IA. Shortly after graduation he joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in February of 1977. Upon returning from the Army Van spent a short time in Michigan before moving back to Van Buren County. He spent many years at Iowa Malleable until it closed, and he finished his career at Barker Wire in Keosauqua. Van was united in marriage to Doris Dill and they spent many years together until her death in 2021. Van was a proud supporter of the 2nd Ammendment and enjoyed reading and watching old history and war movies. He was a simple man with a caring heart who will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Van was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Doris (2021) and four brothers, Jack, Thomas, Joseph, and Robert. Left to honor his memory is his brother, Dennis Ritz and many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
